What Are Nance Appliances?
Nance appliance are used in patients who have severe underbite issues. The appliances help hold your upper and lower teeth together in a very precise way. They are only to be worn during arch orthodontics treatment. Sometimes, a retainer is fitted after the treatment has ended, but it is not always necessary. If you wear a retainer before wearing your Nance appliance, make sure it is made specifically for use with arch orthodontics; otherwise, it could worsen your bite and cause problems in other areas of your mouth and jaw. Your provider will help you figure out if you need a retainer when using Nance appliances.
Why Use Them
Arch orthodontics help treat a variety of problems, including crowding and severe tooth rotation. Their main function is a reduction in crossbite (also known as overbite) by gently pulling back and up on your upper arch while pushing forward and down on your lower arch. Because they move such different parts of your mouth in opposing directions, you’ll likely be wearing them for awhile—but if you follow instructions carefully, they should help you see your best smile in no time. Here are a few pointers on how long to wear Nance appliances depending on which condition you have: Crowding or overbites , wear at least three months; it may take even longer if you’re dealing with other orthodontic issues like rotations or an open bite.
What to Expect from Treatment
It is recommended that you wear Nance Restorations for approximately 9 hours a day for three consecutive months. At your next follow-up visit, your dentist will determine whether your bite has corrected to an ideal position and if it has, he or she will remove any remaining restoration material. If not, you may be asked to wear a removable appliance from time to time in order to retrain yourself and achieve improved results. This process can take as long as 12 months or more, depending on individual cases.
The Process of Treatment
Although patients can be treated in a single day, treatment usually takes several days. An impression is made of your teeth and gums, and an appliance is created by a dental technician that's fitted precisely over your teeth. You wear your Nance appliance at least 22 hours every day. After 4–8 weeks, you return to our office for a checkup where we evaluate your progress and make any necessary adjustments in fit or movement of each tooth. We also take new photos so that you have current images of your mouth as part of your permanent record.
What it Feels Like While Wearing the Appliance
The Nance Appliance is comfortable to wear, because it is virtually invisible and it doesn’t cause any pain or irritation. However, some people with sensitive teeth may experience slight discomfort when they first start wearing their new appliance. Most dentists recommend their patients wear their appliance while they sleep at night, but that can be difficult in some cases. If you have trouble sleeping with your mouth closed, talk to your dentist about whether there are any alternative recommendations that might work better for you personally.
To Remove or Not to Remove During Evening Hours
Your Nance appliance should be worn on a full-time basis. It is not suggested that you remove your Nance appliance at night, as it could lead to bad oral habits, such as teeth grinding and clenching. That being said, if you wish to try removing your appliance at night in order to sleep more comfortably, it’s important that you first have a dental professional check out your mouth and examine whether or not there are any issues with leaving it out. What we’re trying to say is...dentists know better than us; use their advice before attempting something like leaving an orthodontic device out of your mouth overnight! Removing your Nance Appliance at Night
It’s important that you wear your Nance appliance every day, even when you sleep. Sleeping with a Nance on is perfectly safe; however, if you sleep on your stomach or side, it’s possible that there will be some discomfort. This can happen if your mouth hangs open while wearing a Nance appliance and therefore allows air to enter into your mouth. When sleeping with a Nance, it’s best to lie on your back (in either case) in order to prevent any issues from occurring. Remember also that it can take up two weeks until your mouth becomes accustomed to having something in it while you are sleeping and therefore may not notice any side effects right away.
